Graham, residing in Sidney BC,
is one of Canada's renowned
artist / author / educators, with
a reputation for creating
interesting transparent
watercolours in a wide range of
subjects. He is internationally
know as a result of a very
successful book, "Watercolor and
How" published by Watson-Guptill,
New York. which is distributed
world wide. His work is featured
in two other books by
Watson-Guptill. Graham has
conducted watercolour workshops
and seminars across Canada for 15
years.
Born in 1933 in Toronto, he
has always had a creative flair,
and for 40 years, watercolour has
been his primary medium. His
philosophy is that there is no
substitute for the ability to
draw, and artists must always
strive for skill plateaus, and
continually develop an original
concept. As a result of this
philosophy Graham has become
absorbed in the Art of Japanese
Woodblock
Prints. He is intrigued with
the process of creating his own
prints, where he is using his
skills and understanding of
transparent watercolours.
Graham, states that "As you
grow with your art, you realize
that nature is to be interpreted
not copied. Copying is a craft,
while interpreting is a creative
process, which combines
imagination, talent and skill."
Using representational imagery,
he goes beyond the eye's image to
that of the mind's
interpretation, to create images.
Emotions should be an integral
part of a painting, creating a
visual statement.
